If you bought a theme from MY STORE, I’ll show you some tricks to install the WordPress theme with content on your website just like the demo. And everything with just a few clicks. This guide applies to any Genesis theme with demo content available.
All you have to do after that is to change the text and photos with yours and delete what you don’t use.
Why Install a WordPress Theme with Content
Because it’s much quicker. You will not have to struggle with instructions and widgets. And you will be sure everything is set correctly. In a matter of minutes, you will have your site showing like the demo site and you will be able to focus on your content. Including Gutenberg Pages.
All my themes have detailed instruction about each part of your website and you can use the guide if you want to understand the theme and make the most of it. But usually, people want the demo.
So, let’s get started.
INSTALL A WORDPRESS THEME
First thing first. You bought the theme and received a zip file. Go To APPEARANCE >> THEMES. The Genesis Framework it’s not included in the file with the theme so you must purchase it separately.
Warning! Don’t install the theme if you don’t receive the red message.
The Genesis Framework must be installed and activated on your website in order to have that message that your website is ready for a Genesis Child Theme. If you have the Genesis Framework installed and activated but that message doesn’t show up, it means your version of Genesis is outdated and unfunctional.
If your website is ready, You can click on the button with ADD NEW or ADD NEW THEME and upload the zip file with the theme.
COMMON ERROR WHEN INSTALLING A THEME
Stylesheet Is Missing
If you receive errors such as – Package could not be installed. The WordPress theme stylesheet is missing, WordPress theme stylesheet missing, theme install failed, broken theme stylesheet is missing, the following themes are installed but incomplete, the stylesheet is missing.
Don’t panic it’s nothing wrong with the theme. At least my themes 😀
Usually, the theme zip file contains demo files, guideline, PSD files and so on. Without checking, if you upload the entire zip file into WordPress and thinking the theme install would be successful, then you are doing wrong and you will get theme stylesheet missing an error.
I don’t include the demo files in the theme folder because a lot of people doesn’t bother to read the instructions, to unzip the folder and upload to WordPress only the zip file with the theme. And I was receiving like crazy messages that the theme is broken. But, sometimes, on the websites where I upload my zip files with the themes, they will automatically archive the file again. So, it will be a zip file in a zip file and the WordPress couldn’t reach the theme’s files.
How to fix Stylesheet Is Missing error
You need to unzip the theme file (right click > extract files) and find the actual theme files. The theme files will look something like this. The files can vary depending on the theme functions but every theme must have style.css and functions.php.
Now zip those theme files (select all the files, right click, add to archive, Zip) and upload only that zip file into your WordPress installation. This will work well in many cases and resolves the error “Theme install failed.”
When installation is complete, activate the child theme.
HOW TO INSTALL A WORDPRESS THEME WITH CONTENT ON A NEW WEBSITE
Now the theme is installed and activated but everything is empty. You have to follow the setup guide for the theme and add content.
If you want to speed up the process, follow the steps below in order. Otherwise, you will create a bit of a mess, double content, and widgets.
INSTALL & ACTIVATE THE REQUIRED PLUGINS
If you take a look at the page with the setup guide, you will find PLUGINS USED IN DEMO section, where you can find information about plugins usage. Also, you will have a yellow message with the plugins required.
Keep in mind! If you don’t have installed and activated the plugins when you install the demo content, the spaces where the plugin will be required will remain blank. Some plugins require account connected or forms to be created. The demo content will not do that for you.
DOWNLOAD THE DEMO CONTENT FOR YOUR THEME
Go to my Support Website, choose your theme, scroll till the INSTALL DEMO CONTENT section and click on the Download button. A zip file will be downloaded on your computer.
If you unzip the folder, you will see a .wie file for widgets and .xml files for pages, posts, products, slides, and testimonials depending on the theme.
INSTALL THE DEMO CONTENT
Go to TOOLS > IMPORT > WORDPRESS > INSTALL NOW > RUN IMPORTER
Then, from your folder with demo content choose .xml files with the type of content you want to install. If you don’t use WooCommerce and testimonials don’t install products and testimonials. It’s important to install pages, you will have your Gutenberg Pages ready, and slides. If the theme use slides.
Usually, featured images will not appear. So, start the customize process with the featured images for pages and posts. And keep in mind that the images from demo content are just for the demo, you can’t use them on your website unless you have a license.
Don’t install the demo content 2 times. It will double your content. If you want to start again, delete all the content you added in the first place.
INSTALL THE WIDGETS CONTENT
Right now on your website, you have the content from the demo theme but we have to place it on the spaces available.
The first step, Go to Plugins > ADD NEW and search for the Widget Importer & Exporter Plugin ( free plugin ). Install and activate the plugin.
Next step, from TOOLS, click on the Widget Importer & Exporter and upload ( choose file > import widgets )the .wie file from your demo content folder.
After your widgets will be imported , your Homepage, sidebar, footer, header and the rest of the widgets will look like the demo.
Often, some pictures may be broken, it doesn’t matter because you replace them anyway. And if some widgets are empty, it means that it is missing a plugin or it is not set properly, the plugins as Instagram feed require an Instagram account connected first.
CHANGE THE CONTENT WITH YOURS
For this step, you have to go to Appearance > Customize and visit every section to change the content with yours. Build your menus, select a menu for every section available, add your logo, change your colors. Go to every widget and change the images and text.
Same thing for Pages, Products, Testimonials and Slides.
If there is something you don’t want to use, delete the widget in there and let the section blank.
Check the SETUP GUIDE THEME PAGE for menus and plugins settings. Every Theme has informations about everything. Take your time to read the instructions carefully if you got in some problem or something is not showing up like in the Demo Theme.
FINAL CLEAN UP
It’s good practice to delete any pages, posts, images, plugins, themes you don’t use. It will only slow down your website for nothing. Visit every section of your WordPress Website and make a little cleanup. Delete images and posts from Demo Content.
HOW TO INSTALL A WORDPRESS THEME WITH CONTENT ON AN EXISTING WEBSITE
The procedure is quite the same as installing a WordPress Theme with Content on a new website but you have to be careful at some things.
Obviously, all your widgets will change so copy the text from your existing widgets somewhere before changing your theme.
Your Posts will not be deleted, only the design will change and you will have to run the Regenerate Thumbnails Plugin to resize your featured images for the new theme. And don’t install the .xml file for posts.
Because the pages from my demo content are Gutenberg Pages, I recommend installing the .xml files for pages on an existing website.
When you will install the pages you will have 2 about page, 2 contacts and so on. I will advise so, even if it’s a little confusing at the beginning, but you can open the 2 pages on 2 windows and only copy paste the text from the old page in the new Gutenberg Page.
Warning! Don’t delete the old page! You will lose all the existing traffic. When someone will click on the old page somewhere on the internet, will respond with a 404 page not found.
When your new Page is ready, turn your editor to Code Editor, select all the code, Go to the old page, delete everything, and paste the code, then change again your Editor to Visual Editor.
And your old page must look like the new page. You can delete the new page now. I think is faster this way, instead of deleting all on your old page and building from scratch.
Make a backup of your website before changing any theme, just to be sure, in case anything goes crazy. Installing a WordPress Theme with Content it’s really a good idea unless you missed some steps and installed the files a bunch of times and create chaos in there. You want to speed up your work not to be frustrated with agony.
Anyway, if you want to add some different type of content somewhere, check the setup guide page to understand the widget’s structure and style.
These instructions go with any Genesis Theme that has .xml files with demo content and .wie file for the widget’s content.
